Your own collagen, gradually rejuvenated.

Sculptra Aesthetic® is unique in that it is a true “volumizer” and not just a filler. This is the celebrity procedure that seems to keep them looking “unaged” for years.

Sculptra offers an incredibly natural improvement not just in volume but in skin quality as well. The TDI staff’s favorite product for rejuvenation is Sculptra. Dr. Chiu’s expertise with Sculptra allows the most natural and gradual improvement compared to all the other injectables.

If you are seeking natural-looking rejuvenation, call us at The Derm Institute. Dr. Chiu will work with you to decide if this treatment is right for you. Call us at (310) 939-9800 to schedule your visit today!

How Does Sculptra work?

Sculptra is a true bio-active product which stimulates collagen production gradually over time to renew volume and fullness while improving skin texture and often giving the “Sculptra glow”. The effects are slightly slower to manifest than traditional fillers, as it is your own collagen being stimulated over time, but Sculptra provides the “wake-up” fibroblasts need to make new healthy collagen, resulting in a lift, increased volume, improved skin texture, and softening of wrinkles and folds.

The Derm Institute’s favorite product for skin rejuvenation.

Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a safe bio-compatible and biodegradable material that has been in the medical field for decades. It is the longest lasting of the fillers at up to or greater than two years. Unlike the hyaluronic acid fillers, Sculptra does not give you instant results but builds volume with 2-3 treatment sessions typically spaced about 6 weeks apart to gradually fill in hollows, boost volume, and contour a more youthful face over a period of months. Studies show continued increased collagen production for up to two years.

Recovery After Sculptra

Sculptra is an injectable filler administered via a quick, in-office treatment. After your injections, you can resume your regular daily activities immediately. Dr. Chiu will provide detailed recovery instructions after your procedure, which may include:

  • Avoid using some medications, including products that contain ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen.
  • Resume your regular activities with no downtime. Avoid alcohol and strenuous activity for 24 hours.
  • A cold pack can reduce swelling and increase comfort after treatment. Apply a cold pack to the treated areas for a few minutes at a time. Ice the treated areas several times over the first 24 hours.
  • Massage the treated area for five minutes at a time at least five times each day for five days after treatment.

Our office is available to answer any questions or concerns during recovery.

Common Questions:

What is Sculptra Aesthetic?

Sculptra Aesthetic is a dermal filler made from a biocompatible material called poly-L-lactic acid, which works to replace lost collagen. Poly-L-lactic acid is a safe substance that has been used in medicine for many years (specifically in dissolvable stitches). Sculptra Aesthetic is the first facial injectable that can give you noticeable results that emerge subtly. It stimulates your own collagen to give you a more natural-looking appearance without giving you away.

How is Sculptra different from other fillers?

Sculptra is a natural “volumizer,” boosting your own collagen production over time.   This results in a natural softening of features and a more youthful and rested appearance that lasts for a longer period of time.  Because of the increase in collagen production, we see our patients’ skin texture improve as well—what we refer to as the “Sculptra glow”.  A filler like Juvederm or Restylane gives more instant results because of the product that is placed but is more minimal in its ability to boost collagen production.   Fillers don’t affect texture as much and are shorter lasting then Sculptra. Fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane may last for 12 months or more, whereas Sculptra can last up to 2 years or more.

Where is Sculptra used?

Dr. Chiu will expertly 3-dimensionally lift and soften your features to a subtle more airbrushed appearance by contouring the entire face.  Sculptra can also be used to rejuvenate other areas of the body, including the decollete, tricep, buttock and thigh areas. Sculptra should never be used in the lips or under the eye.

How do I know if Sculptra Aesthetic is right for me?

If you want subtle yet noticeable results, Sculptra Aesthetic may be right for you. Sculptra treats the underlying cause of facial aging by replacing lost collagen. It is injected beneath the skin and works to gradually replace lost collagen, targeting the underlying cause of the signs of facial aging. Usually, a series of 2-3 treatments, spaced out over a period of 3-5 months.  Sculptra cannot be used in the lip or under-eye areas, where more traditional fillers are best utilized.

How much does a filler treatment with Sculptra cost?

Sculptra is a long-lasting filler that offers an incredible return for your investment. After your initial results are achieved, Sculptra can last as long as two years. The total cost for your treatment will depend on how much filler is needed and how many treatment sessions you require. Our patients tell us that their treatment with Sculptra in Redondo Beach is worth the investment, and much more affordable than surgical procedures that offer similar results.

What is the recovery time after Sculptra?

There is no recovery time necessary with Sculptra, but some side effects such as redness, bruising and swelling may be present for the first 1 or 2 days. These side effects can often be minimized if the patient avoids blood-thinning medications and alcohol for 2 weeks prior to the procedure.

How soon after treatment can I wear makeup?

Most patients can resume wearing makeup within hours of their procedure. Makeup is an excellent way to cover post-procedure redness or bruising while you heal.

Is treatment with Sculptra Aesthetic painful?

Treatment with Sculptra is similar to treatment with other injectable products. A topical numbing cream is usually applied to the skin to alleviate any discomfort. Sculptra is mixed with local anesthetic and is then carefully administered by Dr. Chiu into specific locations to give a subtle, airbrushed appearance. For anyone who wants extra comfort, The Derm Institute also offers Pro-Nox Nitrous Oxide System, a self-administered anesthesia that takes effect almost immediately relieving suspense of discomfort and dread.

Most fillers can be virtually pain-free and bruise-free with Dr. Chiu’s expert “Needle-less” Micro-Cannula technique.

How long does Sculptra Aesthetic treatment last?

It may take up to 2-3 sessions or 3-6 months for the results to appear. Individual results and treatment sessions may vary.  Once the recommended number of treatments is performed, however, the results achieved from Sculptra can last up to 2 years.

Can it be combined with other treatments?

Sculptra is often used as part of a complete facial rejuvenation program that may also include treatments such as other fillersBotox, Dysport or Xeomin, photorejuvenationchemical peels, or laser resurfacing.
