The jawline is a critical facial feature for attractiveness and beauty, and many people desire improved definition in this area. With age, your face loses volume and descends over time with gravity, resulting in jowls that soften the distinction between your jaw and neck. Though skillful makeup application can help in the short term, these hide the problem instead of solving it.

If you want to look your best but struggle with a weaker, smaller chin, droopy jowls, or a less defined than desired jawline either due to age or genetics, Dr. Annie Chiu of The Derm Institute is proud to offer Juvéderm Volux for lower face contouring, including the chin and jawline. Here’s what you need to know about this advanced dermal filler.

Volux for a Defined Jawline

The Derm Institute now offers Juvéderm Volux, an FDA-approved, hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler, to enhance jawline definition and the contours of the lower face.

  • Long lasting results
  • Defined youthful appearance
  • Natural looking results
  • Safe and Effective

Allergan, the makers of Juvéderm, designed Volux to deliver a natural definition to areas like the angle of the jaw, jowls, jawline, and chin. Dr. Chiu can partner with you to create a more defined and youthful lower face. The hyaluronic acid-based filler Volux is a next-generation dermal filler that is designed to give a natural, revitalized lift to the chin and jawline without the telltale signs of artificial filler.  Using advanced injection techniques, Dr. Chiu can use Juvederm Volux to enhance the contours of the lower face, diminishing the appearance of jowls, and create a more chiseled, or heart-shaped face depending on the need.

Clinical trials showed a high satisfaction level for Volux, with improvements lasting well over a year. Balancing the jawline and chin with an injectable like Volux optimizes facial appearance and improves symmetry.

Potential areas Volux can address include:

  • Visible signs of lower facial aging
  • Jowls
  • A weak or ill-defined jawline
  • A deeply cleft chin, a small chin, or a retracted chin

The choice of fillers for facial rejuvenation is important for optimal results. But choosing who performs the injections is the most critical, which we’ll explain below.

Is Volux the Same as Voluma?

While Dr. Chiu utilizes all current FDA-approved fillers available in the United States, fillers like Restylane Lyft and Juvéderm Voluma create facial symmetry, while Juvéderm Volux is differentiated as a hyaluronic acid filler in that it contains a thicker, more cohesive and robust formula. The durable quality of Juvederm Volux is ideal to enhance jawline definition, lift the jowls, and balance the chin with natural-appearing results like other hyaluronic acid fillers that last up to 18 months. Through cohesive formulas designed with poly-L-lactic acid are appropriate to enhance jawline definition, most patients prefer hyaluronic acid fillers for natural results that last up to 18 months. Therefore, Juvéderm’s Volux can fill the non-surgical gap for jawline improvement.

Like our other Juvéderm injectable products, Volux is a hyaluronic acid filler to address lost facial volume and revitalize treated areas.  On the lower face, the Volux consistency imitates more closely bone and is more proficient in lifting tissues along the lower face including the chin and jawline.

Is Volux FDA-Approved?

On Aug. 3, 2022, Allergan announced the FDA approval of Juvéderm Volux for adults over 21 with moderate to severe jawline volume loss as studied in clinical trials. Lower face volume loss transcends race, gender, ethnicity, and age. Because so many people struggle with this aesthetic issue due to genetics or soft tissue loss, Dr. Chiu is excited to introduce them to Volux to improve chin profiles, jawline definition and eliminate saggy jowls.

Is Volux Available in the U.S.?

Juvéderm’s Volux for jawline contouring is now available with Annie Chiu, MD at The Derm Institute.  Contact us if you are interested! Volux’s FDA approval represents the most significant leap in innovation for Juvéderm’s hyaluronic acid fillers since it introduced Voluma. It complements our product line at The Derm Institute, offering more structure and lift capacity to enhance your jawline contour for first-time impressions or social media posts. This product has high satisfaction in men and women alike.

How Long Will Volux Last?

Juvéderm Volux is Allergan’s longest-lasting hyaluronic acid dermal filler. Clinical studies have shown a duration of up to two years. The length of dermal filler benefits ultimately depends on how quickly your body breaks down the product, which varies from patient to patient. As with all hyaluronic acid fillers, you can have Volux dissolved by using the hyaluronidase enzyme if you are dissatisfied with your results.

What should I expect after my Juvederm Volux Treatment?

You may experience some minor swelling and redness at the injection site.  This is normal and should resolve over a few days.

If you wish to minimize bruising, please follow our Pre-Filler Directions detailing what medication to avoid to decrease your risk of bruising.

Daxxify: 5 Things to Know About the New Botox Alternative

In late 2022, the FDA approved Daxxify, a Botox-like injectable for facial wrinkle and line reduction in adult women and men. It is in a family of aesthetic injectables known as neuromodulators, which include Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin. However, the impact these established injectables typically have are similar but slightly different due to unique formulations. With the very recent FDA approval, Daxxify or “Daxi”, is only currently available in limited select markets and offices. The Derm Institute and Dr. Annie Chiu is proud to be one of the exclusive offices with early access for patients who are looking to be treated with Daxxify.

What is Daxxify?

Daxxify, also referred to as “Daxi,” is a similar neuromodulator to those brands on the market that we are already familiar with, like Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin. The critical difference is that a peptide is attached to the neurotoxin, which allows muscles to absorb and uptake more of the active ingredient.

Daxxify is used to treat frown lines (the “11s”), forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, neck bands, and any other dynamic wrinkle  just like the established neurotoxins we’ve used for years. It can also decrease sweating in your palms and armpits and help reduce grinding or TMJ symptoms, just like its predecessors.

So, what’s different about Daxi? In clinical trials submitted to the FDA for approval, eighty percent of participants using Daxxify had benefits for up to 6 months, which is almost double the duration of current neuromodulators on the market, such as Botox and Dysport, which on average last 3-4 months. Daxxify allows patients to have more flexibility in choosing the best wrinkle treatment specifically to their lifestyle its increased duration of results. This is ideal for patients who have busy lifestyles and easier maintenance. Here is more information we think you should know about Daxi.

1: Botox Comparison

All neurotoxins need proteins to help penetrate targeted muscles and wrinkles, and Botox and Dysport use certain accessory proteins for that job. However, Daxxify is the first neuromodulator to use a unique peptide to make Daxxify longer-lasting. Formulated without albumin, Daxxify is also the first and only vegan neurotoxin on the market today.

Daxi or Daxxify was originally developed as a topical alternative medication to offer Botox benefits–scientists attached a peptide to the neurotoxin to help increase the product absorption into the skin and muscle. While this topical variant did not achieve enough penetration through the skin, scientists discovered that their new formulation offered superior wrinkle-reducing benefits when injected into the targeted muscle.

2: Who Is a Suitable Candidate for Daxi?

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Annie Chiu says almost anyone who has used  Botox or Dysport or is looking for dynamic wrinkle reduction (most commonly in areas like the glabella, crow’s feet, or forehead, will be suitable candidates for Daxxify. In addition, she points to patients who have short-term Botox duration of benefits because of a higher metabolism as being particularly good candidates. Also, some patients have particularly longstanding or stubborn etched lines, especially in the glabella or “11s” of frown lines between the brows, Daxxify can be used for not only better results, but the longer duration will lead to a retraining of these muscles and produce a more softened relaxed effect at baseline. But, of course, this is a conversation longtime Botox users would need to have with Dr. Chiu during a consultation to see what neuromodulators are best for them. At The Derm Institute, Dr. Annie Chiu uniquely customizes different brands of neuromodulators in different areas of the face, offering a bespoke treatment with the best combination of results and duration that is best for your unique features and lifestyle.

3: Daxxify Treatment Sites

Dr. Chiu recommends Daxi to her patients who are looking for longer-lasting with outcome duration compared to their current Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, or Xeomin regimen. Daxxify can be used for any area with dynamic wrinkles, most commonly it is the glabella aka frown lines, forehead horizontal lines, and crow’s feet, but like all neuromodulators, Daxi can be artfully used to balance the entire face, including treatment of masseters or TMJ, neck bands, neck tightening, downturned mouth, gummy smiles, to induce a lip flip or brow lift, decrease bunny lines, and chin peppling. Dr. Chiu’s unique style is full face and neck evaluation and treatment for true harmony and optimization, not just the basic areas that most injectors are limited to treating.

Daxxify’s potential is specifically promising for women and men looking to sustain a relaxed forehead with fewer visits to the office. Daxxify is currently only being offered in a select group of offices in the United States, and as a key opinion leader in aesthetics, Dr. Chiu is pioneering the use of longer-lasting Daxxify. With multiple neuromodulators now on the market, treating wrinkles in a natural way has become a complex treatment to perfect, and it takes a well-trained and artistic injector who understands skin structure and facial anatomy.

4: Alternative Uses For Daxi

Like Botox, Daxxify has alternative uses that help our patients deal with medical issues and aesthetics. These treatments are designed to help adults with their quality of life. They include:

Grinding or Clenching of the Jaw (TMJ)

Treatment of the jaw muscles can help with aching, soreness, or headaches associated with teeth grinding. Daxxify treatment in masseters can be used both symptomatically and to create a more slender, heart-shaped lower face.

Eyelid Spasms

With its benefits for blocking nerve endings, it also stops muscle spasms that may cause eyelid twitching. So patients with uncontrolled blinking and narrowed eyelids were the first to see benefits from neuromodulator injections.

Excess Sweating

Neuromodulators are excellent treatments to help patients who experience excessive sweating. If antiperspirant products don’t help much, then Daxxify can reduce this issue of excessive underarm sweating.

5: No Downtime

Daxi involves no downtime or significant recovery. You can return to your usual routine once we complete the treatment. Bruising is very uncommon.

The Bottom Line

So the question is simple: Is Daxxify the new Botox?

Daxi is not a Botox replacement, but it will be another neuromodulator option to offer our patients a more customized approach to wrinkle and fine-line reduction. Now that Daxxify has FDA approval and works so well, it will allow our patients to have an additional option regarding dynamic wrinkles and fine lines. If you are looking for a longer-lasting alternative to botox with perhaps only twice-a-year treatments for maintenance, or you have found your current Botox duration to be unsatisfactory, Daxxify may be an option for you.

Your Ultimate Guide to the Different Types of Injectables | The Derm Institute

As we age, our faces naturally lose the subcutaneous fat stored just below the skin (think how baby fat conveys youth). With our facial muscles working closer to the skin surface, our smile lines and crow’s feet become more apparent.

In addition to this, the natural aging process results in bone loss in specific areas of the face, in particular the jawline and chin area, leading to a more droopy appearance.  Photodamage and environmental stresses along with intrinsic aging also affect the canvas of our skin– leading to uneven pigment, prominent pore size, and fine lines.  Other factors also affect our facial skin, including stress, genetics, and lifestyle.

Injectables can give you a more youthful look in a fraction of the time, with minimal downtime and at a considerably lower cost than that of a facelift. Read on to learn more about our injectable treatment options here at The Derm Institute!

Neuromodulators

Also known as neurotoxins, neuromodulators are not fillers but injectable proteins that aid in the relaxation of muscles. They are best for patients with visible wrinkles caused by dynamic muscle movement (such as frowning), smiling, or raising of the brows, resulting in wrinkles that are apparent with repetitive movement.  Over time, these wrinkles can etch the skin and become apparent even when we are not making these faces.  That’s why we believe in early preventative treatment with baby amounts of botox before the lines become deeper grooves.

Most neurotoxin injections last three to four months, with some enduring up to six months.

The neuromodulators highly sought after by patients at The Derm Institute include the following:

Botox, the first original cosmetic and therapeutic neuromodulator, is best suited for glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), periorbital (crow’s feet), and forehead lines. In these regions of the face, movement-related wrinkles (sometimes called “dynamic wrinkles”) can make us look tired or angry.

Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin are often also used and priced exactly the same as Botox.  These are similar products made by different manufacturers with very slight differences that an expert like Dr. Annie Chiu can guide you in choosing the optimal combination.

Find out more from board-certified dermatologist Dr. Annie Chiu at The Derm Institute, who perfected the “art” behind combineing neuromodulators Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport, and Xeomin.  Beyond treating just the upper face, full facial botox including bunny lines, lip flips, jawline tightening, smoothing a dimply chin can all be achieved with botox.  The art is in these little areas to create a harmonious, natural, and not frozen appearance.

Injectable Fillers

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected below the skin’s surface to help restore volume loss, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance the natural contours of the face.

There are multiple types of fillers, including hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers (the most common), calcium hydroxyapatite, and poly-L lactic acid fillers. The results from some of these can last one to two years.

Hyaluronic Acid Wrinkle Fillers

The category of wrinkle fillers most popular with dermatologists is hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural sugar molecule. Each type works differently with results that can last from several months up to two years.  Patients often inquire what is the difference between these fillers.  With over 20 HA fillers available in the US, expert non-surgical cosmetic dermatologists can help you refine the best product of choice, based on consistency, softness, flexibility, and duration.  Think of different fillers like different paint brushes–some are meant for fine etched superficial lines, some is for broad lifting strokes.
